How to Store Sports Equipment the Right Way

If you live in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, you know that we're a sporting region. Hockey, skiing, cycling, golf, rowing on the Grand — residents here love to stay active, and that means a lot of gear. The challenge? Sports equipment is bulky, seasonal, and expensive. Storing it improperly can lead to damage, odour, and shorter lifespans for gear that costs hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Here's how to store your sports equipment the right way — whether at home or in a storage unit.

General Rules for Storing Sports Gear

•       Always clean gear before storing it. Sweat, mud, and moisture left on equipment leads to mold, mildew, and material breakdown. Wipe down, air dry, and let things breathe before packing them away.

•       Never store in sealed plastic bags if items are even slightly damp. Moisture needs somewhere to go — trapped moisture means mold.

•       Use gear bags or breathable covers rather than airtight containers for soft goods like jerseys, pads, and gloves.

•       Store items off the floor when possible to protect against moisture and pests.

Sport-by-Sport Storage Tips

Hockey Equipment

Hockey gear is notorious for harbouring bacteria and smell. After the season, wash everything washable (jerseys, socks, undergarments), wipe down hard gear (helmet, shin pads, shoulder pads), and let all of it air out completely before storing. Keep skates in a breathable bag — never with the blade guards on for long-term storage, as moisture can accumulate and rust the blade.

Skis and Snowboards

At the end of ski season, have your skis or snowboard serviced — waxed and edges tuned — before storing. Store them in a cool, dry area (not a hot garage). Stand them vertically or hang them horizontally on a rack. Keep bindings away from direct sunlight, which can cause plastic to degrade over time.

Bicycles

Before storing a bike for the off-season, clean the chain and drivetrain, inflate the tires slightly (not fully — temperature changes can affect pressure), and hang the bike or store it off the floor. If storing in a unit, a wall-mount hook or freestanding rack works great and saves floor space.

Golf Clubs

Golf clubs should be stored upright in a bag. Keep them in a climate-appropriate environment — extreme cold can cause grip materials to crack. Dry off clubheads before storage to prevent rust on irons, and check that grips are clean and dry.

Camping and Outdoor Gear

Tents must be completely dry before storage to prevent mildew and seam damage. Store loosely in a mesh or breathable bag rather than compressed in the stuff sack. Sleeping bags should also be stored uncompressed — hanging them or rolling loosely preserves the fill. Clean camp stoves and check fuel canisters before storing.

Using a Storage Unit for Sports Gear

A 5x5 or 5x10 storage unit can comfortably hold a full season's worth of equipment for one or two people. It keeps your garage clear, your gear protected, and gives you a dedicated place to do a seasonal swap — summer gear in, winter gear out, and vice versa.
